Students and staff at Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College celebrated the publication of the school league tables today, which placed the school as the highest achieving in the borough and one of the highest achieving in the country.

91% of students achieved 5 or more GCSEs at grades A* to C with English and Maths, while 74% achieved the English Baccalaureate.

In the new ‘Progress 8’ Score, Tauheedul achieved the second highest value-added in the country. ‘Progress 8’ is the Government’s main measure to reflect the value that schools add to the achievement of students compared to peers of similar prior ability across the country.

The Government also confirmed that Tauheedul is ranked third in the country for results by students with low prior achievement at primary school. 58% of students from with low prior achievement achieved 5A*-Cs with English and Maths at Tauheedul. Nationally, only 7% of students achieve this result.

Government figures also confirmed that Tauheedul is one of the best schools in the country for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, those living in low-income households or who are in Local Authority care. 85% of students from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve 5A*-Cs with English and Maths at Tauheedul. Nationally, fewer than two-fifths of such students achieve this result.

Executive Principal, (Mufti) Hamid Patel, explained: ‘The Government figures show that we are achieving amazing results with our students – regardless of their prior ability. What’s really impressive is that some of our most vulnerable learners – those who have performed poorly at primary school and those who are in foster care or from low-income families – have achieved so well. That’s really pleasing for everyone.’

In March 2014, the school was rated as ‘outstanding’ following an Ofsted inspection. In their report, inspectors praised ‘highly effective’ teaching, ‘excellent attitudes’ and ‘happy, mature, caring’ students.

In September 2013, a group of leading academics commissioned by Trinity Mirror’s Data Unit ranked Tauheedul as the highest amongst over 3000 state-funded schools. Unlike Government league tables which focus on GCSE results, the ranking by Trinity Mirror provided a ‘comprehensive view’ based on 20 official government indicators – taking into account everything from the expected levels of achievement, quality of teaching, levels of truancy, progression to jobs and university as well as behaviour.

In December 2014, Tauheedul became an Academy as part of the ‘Star Academies’ which has established a number of primary and secondary schools across the country. The Trust has also recently sponsored a number of non-faith academies.

The Chair of Governors of Tauheedul, Kam Kothia, said:

‘We have been very fortunate to have had fantastic success for a sustained period of time. This is due to our strong faith and community ethos, an expectation that every learner can achieve their potential and a commitment by parents, staff and learners to make constant sacrifices. It’s not just important for us that our learners get fantastic exam results, but we also want them to develop into excellent citizens and exemplary human beings.’
