STATEMENT

Students and staff at Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College (TIGHS) celebrated the publication of the school league tables today, which placed the school as one of the highest achieving in the country.

In the new headline ‘Progress 8’ Score, TIGHS achieved the highest value-added in the country.   ‘Progress 8’ is the Government’s main measure to reflect the value that schools add to the achievement of students compared to peers of similar prior ability across the country.

97% of students at the school achieved a ‘good pass’ (grades A* to C) in English and Maths, while 79% achieved the English Baccalaureate.   The English Baccalaureate has been introduced by the Government to recognise achievement in a range of academic and challenging subjects.   It is awarded to students who achieve A*-C in each of English, Maths, two Sciences, a modern foreign language and History or Geography.  Nationally, fewer than a quarter of students achieve the English Baccalaureate.

The Government also confirmed that TIGHS is ranked the highest in the country amongst non-selective schools for results by students with low prior achievement at primary school.  86% of students with low prior achievement achieved a ‘good pass’ in English and Maths at TIGHS.  Nationally, only 8% of students achieve this result.

Government figures also confirmed that TIGHS is also one of the best schools in the country for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, those living in low-income households or who are in Local Authority care.  94% of students from disadvantaged backgrounds achieved a ‘good pass’ in English and Maths at TIGHS.   Nationally, only around a third of such students achieve this result.  61% of students from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve the English Baccalaureate at TIGHS.   Nationally, only a tenth of such students achieve this.

Executive Principal, (Mufti) Hamid Patel, explained: ‘As exams get tougher, the Government figures show that we are continuing to achieve amazing results with our students – regardless of their prior ability and background.  What’s really impressive is that some of our most vulnerable learners – those who have performed poorly at primary school and those who are in foster care or from low-income families – have achieved so well.  That’s really pleasing for everyone.’

In 2015, the school received two accolades from the Schools, Students and Teachers (SSAT) network for the academic results of its learners, the award citing the ‘professionalism, commitment and hard work of the leaders, teachers and students‘.

In March 2014, the school was rated as ‘outstanding’ following an Ofsted inspection.  In their report, inspectors praised ‘highly effective’ teaching, ‘excellent attitudes’ and ‘happy, mature, caring’ students.

In September 2013, a group of leading academics commissioned by Trinity Mirror’s Data Unit ranked TIGHS as the highest amongst over 3000 state-funded schools.   Unlike Government league tables which focus on GCSE results, the ranking by Trinity Mirror provided a ‘comprehensive view’ based on 20 official government indicators – taking into account everything from the expected levels of achievement, quality of teaching, levels of truancy, progression to jobs and university as well as behaviour.

In December 2014, TIGHS became an Academy as part of ‘Star Academies’ which has established a number of primary and secondary schools across the country.  The Trust has also recently sponsored a number of non-faith academies.

Chair of Governors, Kam Kothia, underlined the wider mission of the school: ‘It is incredibly humbling to be a small part of these fantastic achievements.  In addition to having excellent qualifications, we are working hard to nurture our young people into outstanding citizens, with exemplary character and a strong commitment to serving others.’
