TIGHS celebrates exceptional GCSE Results

Thursday 25th August 2016
  • 97% of students achieve GCSEs with grades A* to C in English and Maths.
  • 79% of students achieve the English Baccalaureate.

Students, staff and parents at Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College are today celebrating exceptional GCSE results, placing the school as one of the highest achieving in the region and the country.

97% of students achieved GCSEs with grades A* to C in English and Maths, whilst 79% achieved the English Baccalaureate.

The English Baccalaureate has been introduced by the Government to recognise achievement in a range of academic and challenging subjects.   It is awarded to students who achieve A*-C in each of English, Maths, two Sciences, a modern foreign language and History or Geography.  Nationally, fewer than a quarter of students achieve the English Baccalaureate.

Hafsah Vally – one of three students who achieved 10 A*s and 3 As – said: ‘I am so pleased with my results.  All of my friends have also achieved amazing grades. I really cannot thank our teachers and parents enough for everything they have done for us.’

Executive Principal (Mufti) Hamid Patel, reflected: ‘We are really delighted by these fantastic results.  Although exams are getting tougher each year, our students and staff have continued to excel.  I want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all of our wonderful staff and loyal parents for supporting each of our learners to do so well.’

The GCSE results come just a week after the school achieved fantastic A level results – with 86% of A Levels completed at A*-C and 85% of vocational courses completed at ‘DDD’ Distinction grade or better.

Chair of Governors, Kam Kothia, underlined the wider mission of the school: ‘It is incredibly humbling to be a small part of these fantastic achievements.  In addition to having excellent qualifications, we are working hard to nurture our young people into outstanding citizens, with exemplary character and a strong commitment to serving others.’

The academic achievements are part of several accolades the school has received over the past few years.

In January 2016, the Government confirmed that Tauheedul is one of the best schools in the country for achievement by students with low prior achievement at primary school and from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In March 2014, the school was given an ‘outstanding’ rating by Ofsted inspectors, the third time in a row that the school has received the highest accolade.  In their inspection report, Ofsted praised ‘exceptional progress’ and ‘outstanding leadership’ at the school.

In September 2013, a group of leading academics commissioned by Trinity Mirror’s Data Unit ranked Tauheedul as the highest amongst over 3000 state-funded schools.   Unlike Government league tables which focus on GCSE results, the ranking by Trinity Mirror provided a ‘comprehensive view’ based on 20 official government indicators – taking into account everything from the expected levels of achievement, quality of teaching, levels of truancy, progression to jobs and university as well as behavior.
