Blackburn schools feed the hungry during coronavirus pandemic

Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School (TIGHS), Tauheedul Islam Boys’ High School (TIBHS) and The Olive School, Blackburn, have joined forces to help feed vulnerable people as part of the Star Academies Coronavirus Appeal.

The three schools, who are operating out of the Star Family Hub based in Blackburn, have collected donations of food, toiletries and cleaning supplies to distribute to those in need.

Hundreds of care packages filled with food and toiletries were given to the town’s homeless and other vulnerable people through a foodbank based at TIBHS. Local vulnerable families were also supported with food packages, hygiene kits and hot food through the TIBHS’ outreach programme. Packages were also donated to care home staff and residents to provide comfort during difficult times.

Staff at the schools worked so hard, they even managed to feed more than a thousand people a hot meal in a single day as part of Star Academies’ national ‘Food For All Day’.

Pupils and staff at the schools also worked tirelessly during a PPE drive which saw TIBHS use 3D printers to create plastic visors for staff at The Royal Blackburn Hospital and local care homes. Schools also donated existing stocks of school PPE to local care homes.

Staff at the schools have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the parents, pupils and local and national businesses who have all helped to support the good cause.

Amina Modan, Assistant Principal, at TIGHS said:

“Once again our schools have drawn together to help their local communities during difficult times. Thanks to all our parents, staff, pupils and local businesses, we have been able to provide much needed support to vulnerable families and people in our community. These are truly exceptional times, but we will do whatever we can to continue to serve our community.”

Majid Ditta, Principal of TIBHS, added:

“The generosity of our pupils, parents and staff never ceases to amaze me. Despite the fact that many of us are facing uncertain times, our school community is still dedicated to helping those in need. Thank you to all local supermarkets, especially Morrisons and local businesses and donors for your generous contributions. We are very grateful to all those who have supported us, so that we in turn have been able to offer support to Blackburn’s vulnerable population.”

Smeena Riaz, Principal of The Olive School, Blackburn said:

“I am very proud of the way the staff at our school has worked so hard during what has been a difficult time for us all. We hope that our work has helped to relieve some of the suffering and isolation that local people have endured during the coronavirus pandemic.”

The coronavirus fundraising appeal is just one of several initiatives that has been launched by Star Academies and its schools to help those facing difficulties in our local communities and to support parents and carers throughout the country.

A home learning helpline, StarLine, has been launched to help give practical education advice to parents and carers and a YouTube broadcast StarLive is broadcast weekly to help parents as they educate their children at home.
