Inspiring future leaders at TIGHS

A dynamic group of females gave Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School pupils an inspirational insight into developing their own leadership skills to boost their career prospects.

TIGHS hosted its first Leadership Conference on Friday 12 January. The event brought together pupils from Years 11 to 13 with successful women working in leadership roles across politics, business and digital design. Parents and carers were also welcome to attend.

Pupils heard from four key speakers: Lorna Fitzsimons, former MP for Rochdale and now Chief Executive of Lorna Fitzsimons Consulting; Lou Cordwell of digital design agency Magnetic North; Emma Degg, Chief Executive of North West Business Leadership Team; and Brenda Yearsley of Siemens.

The women’s addresses highlighted how demonstrating key leadership skills and abilities have helped them to achieve success in their working lives and lead their organisations.

The aim of the Leadership Conference was to raise pupils’ awareness of the benefits of developing their leadership skills, our school’s key specialism. A series of workshops helped pupils to refine their career goals, address issues such as assertiveness and develop their public speaking abilities.

Head Girl, Ayah Shah, took part in the Leadership Conference. She said, “Seeing how these women were able to take their own initiative and reach the level of success that they have was truly inspiring. Not only have I learned new aspects of leadership that I can apply to my role as Head Girl, but my view of the future has also transformed as I know that I can carve my own path to lead me wherever I want to go. This was an empowering afternoon for us all.”

Senior Prefect Umairah Malik, from Year 13, added, “Being given the opportunity to meet women who had come from similar backgrounds to us and achieved so much was both inspiring and insightful. We all felt increasingly motivated as the day went on and learnt that while obstacles can be difficult, they can be overcome. Knowing what we, as females, can achieve has undoubtedly inspired me to pursue my ambitions.”

A number of leading universities were also present to provide our pupils with information on different avenues for developing leadership skills for specific career pathways.

Assistant Principal, Amina Modan, arranged the Leadership Conference. She commented, “Through our Leadership Conference we aimed to emphasise to our pupils the wealth of careers and study pathways in which excellent leadership skills will be invaluable. Parents and carers too were welcomed along to speak to representatives of leading universities. It was an excellent event which left our pupils feeling inspired and hugely positive about their next steps.”
