League tables confirm TIGHS as one of the best schools in the country

• ‘Progress 8’ Score of +2.16 – the highest value-added score in the country.
• ‘Attainment 8’ score of 7.0 – 3rd highest amongst non-selective schools in the country.
• 83% of students achieved a ‘strong pass’ in English and Maths – ranked 8th amongst non-selective schools.   93% achieved a ‘standard pass’ in English and Maths, ranked 8th highest.
• 65% achieved the English Baccalaureate, the 4th highest nationally and over 45 percentage points higher than the national average.   The average grade in English Baccalaureate subjects was 6.6 – ranked 5th highest nationally amongst non-selective schools.
• One of the best schools in the country for results by students from disadvantaged backgrounds and with low prior achievement from primary school.
• 82% of students from disadvantaged backgrounds achieved a ‘strong pass’ in English and Maths, ranked 2nd nationally amongst non-selective schools.   Nationally, around a quarter of students achieve this.
• 50% of students with low prior achievement achieved a ‘standard pass’ in English and Maths, ranked 9th highest nationally.   Around one in ten such pupils achieve this nationally.

STATEMENT

Students and staff at Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College (TIGHS) celebrated the publication of the full league tables today, which places the school as one of the highest achieving in the country.

In the headline ‘Progress 8’ Score, TIGHS achieved the highest value-added in the country for the fourth year running and the fifth time in six years.  ‘Progress 8’ is the Government’s main performance measure and reflects the value that schools add to the progress of students compared to their peers of similar prior ability across the country.

83% of students at the school achieved a ‘strong pass’ in English and Maths, while 65% achieved the English Baccalaureate.   The average grade in English Baccalaureate subjects was 6.6.

The English Baccalaureate recognises achievement in a range of academic and challenging subjects. It is awarded to students who achieve grades 9-5 in English, Maths, Science, a modern foreign language and History or Geography.   Nationally, fewer than one in five of students achieve the English Baccalaureate and the average grade in the English Baccalaureate subjects is 4.0.

The Government also confirmed that TIGHS is ranked one of the highest in the country for results by students with low prior achievement at primary school.  50% of students from with low prior achievement achieved a ‘standard pass’ in English and Maths at TIGHS.   Nationally, only 11% of such students achieve this result.

Government figures also reported that TIGHS is one of the best schools in the country for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, those living in low-income households or who are in care.  Over four-fifths of students from disadvantaged backgrounds achieved a ‘strong pass’ in English and Maths at TIGHS, ranked highest nationally for progress by such students. Nationally, only a quarter of disadvantaged students achieve a ‘strong pass’ in English and Maths.

(Mufti) Hamid Patel CBE, Chief Executive of Star Academies which runs the school, explained,

‘Despite harder exams, our amazing students have worked really hard to achieve life-changing outcomes. They owe a lot to their devoted parents and our fantastic teachers and support staff.  However, it is not just about excellent grades. We are also proud that our young women have developed good character, are informed and responsible citizens and have a commitment to serving their communities passionately.’

In addition to the excellent outcomes at GCSE, students also achieved fantastic results in the Sixth Form this summer – with 99% of A Levels completed at A*-C and 83% of vocational courses completed at ‘DDD’ Distinction grade or better.

(Mufti) Hamid Patel CBE also reflected on the reasons for the success of the school,

‘This is a special school, not least because of the work ethic and sense of community that is demonstrated by teachers, support staff and the wonderful young women who study there.  We are particularly proud that those of our girls from the most impoverished backgrounds or who struggled in primary school have progressed so much.’

The academic achievements are part of several accolades the girls’ school has received over the past few years.

In December 2019, the school was designated the Sunday Times North West Secondary School of the Year.  The newspaper described the achievements of the school as ‘astonishing’.

In March 2014, the school was given an ‘outstanding’ rating by Ofsted inspectors, the third time in a row that the school has received the highest accolade.  In their inspection report, Ofsted praised ‘exceptional progress’ and ‘outstanding leadership’ at the school.
