TIGHS celebrates exceptional GCSE results

  • 91% of students achieve a ‘strong pass’ in GCSE English and Maths.
  • 95% of students achieve a ‘standard pass’ in GCSE English and Maths.

Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College (TIGHS) is celebrating GCSE success, after overcoming two years of pandemic disruption.

Pupils have valiantly overcome two years of disruption to their education, following periods of lockdowns, self-isolation and illness, with 91% of students achieve a ‘strong pass’ (grade 9 to 5) in GCSE English and Maths. Exams were completed for the first time in three years following their cancellation in 2020 and 2021.

Safa Moosa achieved the top grade ‘9’ in thirteen subjects. She will be going on to study A levels in Sociology, Chemistry, Psychology and Computer Science.

Safa said:

“These have been such a difficult and disruptive two years. It is really humbling to get through it and achieve such fantastic grades.”

Farah Makkan was awarded the highest grade 9 in twelve of her subjects and a grade 8 in one. She will be going on to study A levels in English Language, Chemistry, Psychology and Sociology. Farah said:

“I am so happy, I feel very blessed to have had the love of my family and friends, and the invaluable support of all of my teachers this year.”

Hafsah Vali also received the highest grade 9 in all thirteen subjects. She will be going on to study A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Psychology.

Hafsah commented:

“With everything all young people have been through, and the return of exams, these grades mean so much more this year. It is not just exams that I have passed – I have also learnt lifelong lessons on resilience, positivity and optimism too.”

At the school, 91% of students achieved GCSEs with Grade 5 or higher in English and Maths – the school’s best ever result in this measure.

The GCSE results come just a week after the school achieved fantastic A level results – with 92% of A Levels at the Sixth Form completed at grades A*-C, three fifths of qualifications (60%) awarded A*-A and over a quarter (27%) securing the top A* grade. The Sixth Form also achieved exceptional outcomes in vocational courses, with almost all (97%) completed at ‘DDD’ Distinction grade or better and almost two-thirds achieving the highest D*D*D* grade.

Sir (Mufti) Hamid Patel CBE, Chief Executive of Star Academies which runs the school, reflected on the unique circumstances of this summer’s results. He said:

“With all the disruption of the past two years, and the way grades have been calculated this year, it is hard for a school to compare this year’s results with previous years.  However, at its core, today is about our young people overcoming adversity and each and every one of them going on to realise their value and achieve their dreams.  We are delighted that the results they have received today mark another milestone on their journey towards that wonderful future.”

The academic achievements at the school are part of several accolades the school has received over the past few years.

In January 2020, for the fourth year running, the Government league tables confirmed that students make more progress at TIGHS than at any other school in the country, using a measure called ‘Progress 8’.  ‘Progress 8’ reflects the improvement that all students make in a school, compared to their peers of similar ability across the country.

The league tables also reported that, for each of the past ten years, TIGHS is one of the best schools in the country for achievement by students with low prior achievement at primary school and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
