TIGHS students celebrate A Level achievements

High-achieving students from Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College (TIGHS) are celebrating A Level success, after overcoming several years of disruption caused by COVID-19.

Despite the upheaval to learning over the past few years, exam scripts were marked and graded in the normal way this summer, as they would have been before the pandemic. This means that the lenient marking and generous grading from last summer has been removed and exam results nationally have fallen back to pre-pandemic levels.

At TIGHS Sixth Form, students are celebrating their achievements as they collect their results and take the next steps towards their dream careers. 85% of TIGHS students leave the college having achieved at least three A Levels at A*-C, with almost two thirds (64%) having secured at least three A*-B grades. Almost a quarter (23%) completed at least three subjects at A* or A grade. In vocational courses, almost all learners (94%) completed a National Extended Diploma at ‘DDD’ (Distinction) level or better with almost a third securing the highest grade D*D*D*.

These outcomes will help students to now progress to apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships across the country.

Faatimah Omar achieved the top A* grade in A Level Biology, Chemistry and Maths. Faatimah said:

“I really couldn’t have done this without the help of my teachers. I am proud to be giving back by working at the school during my gap year before studying dentistry at the University of Manchester.”

Many of the students receiving their results today have succeeded despite the unique difficulties of the past few years. For Ifrah Bibi – off to study Law at the University of Manchester after securing two As and an A* in her A Levels – the experience has made her a resilient person.

“I have worked really hard for these results, and I am really proud of what I have achieved. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my parents and teachers and – with everything that we had had to overcome – I feel well prepared for the challenges of university.”

Shakirah Bibi completed a Level 3 BTec course in Health and Social Care, securing the highest D*D*D* grade. She will be training to become a nurse at Lancaster University in September. The dedicated student paid tribute to her devoted parents.

She said:

“I am thrilled to have achieved these incredible grades. Without the love and prayers from my parents, I simply would not have been able to achieve one of my lifelong dreams today and become a nurse.”

Overall, almost all A Levels at the Sixth Form received grades A*-C (95%), with four fifths achieved at Grade B or better. Almost half of qualifications (47%) were awarded at A*-A and 12% of A Levels were completed at the top A* grade, well above national averages.

These results mean that the TIGHS Sixth Form is likely to be ranked amongst the best performing schools and colleges in the country, when league tables are published in January.

Asia Ali, Head of Sixth Form at TIGHS, praised students who she said had worked with incredible spirit to achieve fantastic results.

She said:

“The past few years have presented challenge after challenge to the students and staff at our Sixth Form. This year, with a return to ‘normal’ marking and grading despite anything but a normal two years of college, students have had to dig really deep. We are so proud of every one of our young women – their optimism, perseverance and fortitude – and wish them every success in the future.

“Congratulations to all our students and a heartfelt thank you to all our families and staff without whom none of the achievements we celebrate today would be possible.”

Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College (TIGHS) is a secondary academy and sixth form for pupils aged 11-18 in Blackburn. TIGHS is one of the country’s top-performing schools, having been in the top two for Progress 8 in national league tables every year since the measure was introduced in 2016.

In October 2022, the school was given an ‘outstanding’ rating by Ofsted inspectors. The Ofsted report concluded that: ‘Pupils are very proud to attend this school. This is a place where they thrive. Pupils feel highly valued. They are extremely happy and feel safe in school’.
