TIGHS students celebrate A Level achievements

High achieving students from Tauheedul Islam Girls’ High School and Sixth Form College (TIGHS) are celebrating A Level success, after overcoming two years of pandemic disruption.

Students and staff from across the school faced a turbulent two years as they worked to counter disruption caused by periods of self-isolation and illness. Exams were completed for the first time in three years following their cancellation in 2020 and 2021.

Today, students are celebrating their achievements as they collect their results and take the next steps towards their dream careers. 92% of TIGHS students leave the college having achieved at least three A Levels at A* to C, with 71% having secured at least three A* to B grades. Almost two fifths (36%) completed at least three subjects at A* or A grade. In vocational courses, almost all learners (94%) completed an Extended Diploma at ‘DDD’ (Distinction) level or better with almost two thirds securing the highest grade D*D*D*.

Many of the students will now progress to complete degree courses at universities across the country.

Fatima Patel achieved the top A* grade in A Level Biology, Sociology and Psychology as well as a Grade A in Chemistry.  She will study Dentistry at Leeds University. Fatima said:

“I am very excited for the next five years and all the challenges that await. A huge thank you to all my teachers who have helped me to come this far.”

Maryam Sayed completed a Level 3 BTec course in Health and Social Care, securing the highest D*D*D* grade.  She will be undertaking a Teaching Apprenticeship in September.   The dedicated student paid tribute to her teachers and parents, who she said had helped her to achieve despite the disruption caused by the pandemic. Maryam said:

“I am overwhelmed to have achieved such amazing results throughout my time in TIGHS. I am so grateful towards both of my teachers for all their support and hard work. I also owe this success to my parents; without their devotion and prayers I couldn’t have done it.”

For aspiring nurse, Maryam Ahmed, her results will mean that she has secured a place at university to pursue a long sought after career. Maryam achieved D*D*D* in BTec Health and Social Care and will take up a place at the University of Central Lancashire to study adult nursing. She said:

“I am thrilled to have achieved these incredible grades.  Without the love and prayers from my parents, I simply would not have been able to achieve one of my lifelong dreams today, studying at my chosen university.”

Many of the students receiving their results today have succeeded despite the unique challenges of the past two years.  For Haajarah Syeda – who will study Audiology at the University of Manchester after securing 3 As in her A Levels – the past two years have made her a stronger person. Haajarah said:

“TIGHS has shaped me to show resilience despite any setbacks I face, allowing me to feel well-prepared to begin a new journey at university.”

Most of all though, today’s results are about the young women at TIGHS being able to achieve their dreams. This is true for Fatima Nagori who achieved Grade A in A Level Politics, Chemistry and Maths and now plans to study Computer Science at Lancaster University. She said:

“I’m very grateful to be given the opportunity to study something I’m so passionate about. I’d like to thank my family, friends and incredibly dedicated teachers whose support has allowed me to come this far.”

Overall, almost all A Levels at the sixth form received grades A* to C (97%), with almost nine out of ten (87%) achieved at Grade B or higher.  Three-fifths of qualifications (60%) were awarded at A* and A and just over a quarter (27%) secured the top A* grade, well above national averages.

These results mean that the TIGHS sixth form is likely to be ranked amongst the best in the country, when national league tables are published in January.

Asia Ali, Head Sixth Form at TIGHS, praised students who she said had worked with incredible fortitude to achieve fantastic results. She said:

“The past two years have presented challenge after challenge to the students and staff at our sixth Form.  Yet despite these difficulties, our students dug deep to make steadfast progress and realise their dreams.  Our students’ success owes a great deal to their resilience, character and perseverance; all of which are traits we hope will serve them well throughout their lives.  Congratulations to all our students and a heartfelt thank you to all our families and staff without whom none of the achievements we celebrate today would be possible.”
