Pastoral and Achievement Tutors (PATs)

The primary role as a Pastoral and Achievement Tutor is to work closely with Y10 and Y11 students in order to consolidate learning from the classroom.

This is a fantastic opportunity to support students with English and Maths and also share the invaluable skills they possess, to support the progress of other learners.

Expectations and Responsibilities:

Pastoral and Achievement Tutors Tutee
  • A positive, enthusiastic and energetic attitude to share learning is essential.
  • A helpful, approachable and respectful relationship must be established.
  • A weekly meeting with the tutee must be held (min duration 45 mins), speak to HoY on behsviour progress as appropriate.
  • Preparation for teaching session is essential- Maths and English teachers will support with resources.
  • If a session cannot be held or there are other concerns; these must be communicated to the Assistant Principal (Community and Development)
  • Write a brief note each week concluding the content covered and details of work that has been set. (There must be some exam style questions set or work for the tutee to take away and practice each week)
  • Ensure they check and support improvements for work/exam questions that have been set in the follow up session.
  • A positive attitude and a keen willingness to learn is essential.
  • A respectful relationship with the Pastoral and Achievement Tutor must be established.
  • 100% attendance is necessary to all sessions. If unable to attend, this should be rearranged in the first instance or speak to a Head of Year
  • Bring relevant work and questions for the Pastoral and Achievement Tutor.
  • If there is a problem that cannot be resolved or further support is needed, please see the Director of English and Maths.
  • Write down the exam questions set or work directed by the Pastoral and Achievement Tutor and ensure it is done in time for the next session.  (Remember that this does not replace independent revision or homework set in class)
  • Make a note of the feedback given by the Pastoral and Achievement Tutor.

PATs are enthusiastic about the benefits of school life and are eager to share their learning and experience with others.

All prospective PATs are required to follow a formal selection process and need to ensure they are meeting their target grades in the subject.  In addition, PATs need to demonstrate:

  • A passionate belief in the school’s mission statement.
  • High levels of attendance and punctuality to school.
  • High levels of commitment to honesty, good conduct and polite use of language.
  • Good character – being conscientious about their duties, being helpful and fair to all students, and keeping confidential information to themselves.
  • Commitment to serving other people and Khidmah (service).
